Question 1

What exactly does a Concrete Carpenter do?

Accepted Answer

A concrete carpenter (often called a "Cribber" or "Formworker") does not usually pour the concrete. Instead, you build the high-strength molds (forms) that hold the wet concrete in place. This involves reading complex blueprints to erect vertical walls, columns, and suspended slabs using engineered systems (like Doka or Peri) or traditional plywood and 2x4s. Once the concrete cures, you "strip" (remove) the forms to reveal the finished structure.

Question 2

What is the difference between a Concrete Carpenter and a Concrete Finisher?

Accepted Answer

They are two completely different trades that work side-by-side. The Carpenter builds the mold (the structure). The Finisher manages the wet concrete itself, floating, and troweling it to get a smooth, flat surface. Carpenters work with wood and steel; Finishers work with wet cement.

Question 3

What tools are unique to Concrete Carpentry?

Accepted Answer

Forget your delicate finish hammer. You will need a heavy framing hammer (22oz+), a sledgehammer (4lb or 8lb), a pry bar, and a heavy-duty tape measure that can withstand mud and oil. You will also use specialized hardware like "snap ties," "wedges," and "whalers" that are specific to holding forms together under extreme pressure.

Question 4

Is Concrete Carpentry considered a seasonal job?

Accepted Answer

Less so than residential framing. While pouring concrete in freezing temperatures is difficult, large commercial projects (high-rises, bridges, dams) run year-round. In winter, crews build "hoarding" (temporary heated enclosures) to keep the work going. It is generally considered one of the most stable sectors of carpentry due to the scale of the projects.
