Question 1

Is "Rough Carpentry" the same thing as Framing?

Accepted Answer

They are closely related but distinct terms. Rough carpentry is the broader category encompassing all structural work that does not require a clean finish—including concrete formwork, scaffolding, and blocking. Framing is a specific subset of rough carpentry focused on erecting the skeletal structure (studs, joists, and rafters). On a job posting, "Rough Carpenter" often implies you will be doing both framing and concrete work.

Question 2

What is the difference between a Framer and a General Carpenter?

Accepted Answer

Specialization vs. Generalization. A General Carpenter is a "jack of all trades" who might handle everything from drywall patching to door installation. A Framer is a production specialist focused on structural integrity, speed, and mental math. Framers are expected to read blueprints faster and execute complex roof cuts (hips, valleys, and jacks) that general carpenters may not encounter.

Question 3

What framing methods should I know to get hired?

Accepted Answer

In residential construction, "Platform Framing" is the dominant standard you must master. However, many high-end custom homes and commercial projects effectively use "Balloon Framing" or "Timber Framing" elements. For commercial listings on ChiselJobs, knowledge of "Light Gauge Steel Framing" (metal studs) is often a strict requirement distinct from wood framing.

Question 4

What is considered the hardest part of professional framing?

Accepted Answer

Roof geometry is the filter that separates apprentices from journeymen. While wall plating is repetitive, cutting a "bastard roof" (irregular pitches) requires a solid grasp of trigonometry and spatial visualization. Physically, the sheer weight of materials and exposure to the elements makes framing one of the most athletic trades in the industry.

Question 5

How is labor compensation structured for Framers?

Accepted Answer

Compensation varies by sector. Production framers in residential housing often work on "piece-work" (paid by the square foot or board foot), which rewards speed. Commercial and Union framers typically earn a high hourly wage with overtime benefits. When applying, clarify if the "rate" is hourly or performance-based.
